Xianghan Cheng
Xianghan Cheng, born in 1994 in China, Xianghan Cheng is an accomplished abstract painter whose work is deeply inspired by urban landscapes, streets, and music. Cheng earned his BFA from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco in 2020 and his MFA at from California College of the Arts in San Francisco in 2024. His art draws from the rhythm and texture of city life, simplifying and reinterpreting the urban environment through shapes, lines, and layers. Influenced by everything from the textures of tactile sidewalks to the fluidity of graffiti, Cheng’s work merges timelines and experiences into visually dynamic compositions. Cheng’s exhibitions span both solo and group shows across the U.S. and China, including notable appearances at SOMARTS in San Francisco, the Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, and Han Jian Fine Art Gallery in Beijing. His accolades include being a finalist for the Barclay Simpson Awards in 2023 and winning the Murphy & Cadogan Contemporary Art Awards that same year. His earlier recognition includes the Abstract Art Award at the Academy of Art University Spring Show in 2020. Cheng’s artistic philosophy is rooted in the idea of layering impressions to create a rich, textured visual language. His work resonates with a sense of immediacy, inviting viewers to explore the dynamic and fragmented essence of urban environments.
