Before We Know What to Call It

- Group Exhibition at A Space Gallery

Some transformations announce themselves clearly. Others remain difficult to name while they are unfolding. Paradigm Shift: Before We Know What to Call It is a group exhibition exploring moments when old frameworks no longer fully hold, and new ways of seeing have just begun to emerge. We invite artists whose work engages uncertainty, transition, altered perception, technological change, ecological transformation, or shifting social realities.

About Curator: Winner of Curatorial Lab

Hantian Zhang is a San Francisco-based writer and curator. He holds a PhD in Cultural Anthropology from Stanford University and an MFA from the University of San Francisco.

Drawing from backgrounds in anthropology, literary writing, and contemporary art criticism, Zhang's curatorial practice explores how artists respond to moments of technological, ecological, and social transformation. He is particularly interested in periods of uncertainty, when established ways of understanding the world begin to shift and new forms of perception emerge.

His projects emphasize the relationship between artwork, viewer, and exhibition space, often focusing on how spatial encounters can alter habits of looking. Through research-driven exhibitions, he seeks to create environments that invite close attention, curiosity, and alternative ways of seeing.
