New York — A Space Gallery is pleased to present Perfect System, a group exhibition curated by Maggie Wei, featuring works by Jayden Liu, Matthew King, Shuyao Huang, and Sam Christian.
Perfect System centers on how individuals negotiate tension, restraint, and balance within contemporary systems that demand continuous composure and order. Across the works in the exhibition, tension is not simply released but carefully held, adjusted, suppressed, and redistributed. Beneath their composed and often restrained surfaces lies an ongoing
process of self-reconstruction, in which external pressures, stimuli, and emotional disturbances are absorbed and concealed within material, movement, and form.
Within the sensory overload of contemporary urban life, economic and social systems often require the appearance of
stability, making restraint itself an increasingly costly illusion. What appears calm and controlled is sustained through
constant correction and negotiation. The exhibition creates an atmosphere of almost absolute stillness, yet beneath this
quiet surface remains a persistent emotional charge, a fragile order maintained under pressure.
Matthew King is a New York-based artist who works with collage, sculpture, and printmaking under Work. Rodeo. King’s work focuses on semiotics and language, weaving in personal and pop cultural references through his multidisciplinary practice.
Jayden Liu is a multidisciplinary sculptor and performance artist whose practice investigates fractured identities, dispersed forms of power, and the prescribed scripts embedded within institutional systems. Originally trained in theater performance and design, Liu received his BA from National Taiwan University and subsequently worked as a professional theater actor in Taiwan, performing at venues such as the Experimental Theater at the National Theater. He holds an MFA in Fine Arts from Parsons School of Design in New York. Weaving together his background in theatrical choreography with contemporary sculpture, Liu examines how modern structures shape human behavior, language, and resistance, transforming bureaucratic loops into stylized spaces of critical inquiry.
It Doesn't Quite Stay is an art piece by Shuyao Huang. Shuyao is a New York-based artist. She received a B.A. in Painting & Fine Art from Pratt Institute and an M.A. in Art Business from Sotheby’s Institute of Art. Her work has been exhibited throughout New York and commissioned by the NYU Langone Art Program. Through painting, Huang explores perception, color, and visual experience, creating works that encourage sustained engagement and active looking.
Sam Christian is an interdisciplinary artist, living in Brooklyn, working across performance, installation, and image. Across
these mediums, their work examines affective and political networks within material processes and sites. Often measuring
sites of expenditure and economy, and the tensions between the legible and illegible—their work is attentive to subtle
economies of objects as they relate to particular socio-cultural practices and spaces.
Maggie Wei is a Taiwanese curator and designer based in Brooklyn, New York. She holds an MFA in Curatorial Practice from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). Her curatorial practice draws from her experience as a Taiwanese art worker, exploring themes of the body, female autonomy, and contemporary gender discourse. Working between design and curating, she approaches exhibitions with a strong emphasis on spatial composition, visual coherence, and display. Her projects aim to situate the perspectives of emerging artists within an international context while creating carefully considered exhibition environments.
