A Space Gallery is pleased to present Over, Under or Around, a solo exhibition by Evan Peltzman, on view from
August 27 to August 29, 2026.
Over, Under or Around brings together two recent bodies of work by artist Evan Peltzman. At the center of the exhibition
are three paintings, a group of paintings shaped by the artist's experience of repeatedly moving homes over the past two
decades. For Peltzman, the physical home has at times been fleeting; present one moment but gone the next due to
powers outside his control. Rather than depicting architecture as stable or familiar, the paintings shift houses onto their
sides and distort their proportions, denying the viewer a conventional point of orientation. The resulting images speak to a
sense of powerlessness, where familiar structures become unstable and impossible to inhabit.
The exhibition also premieres a new series of works on paper produced during Peltzman's recent artist residencies at
Greywood Arts in Ireland and Buinho in Portugal. Working in charcoal and soft pastel on paper, the artist returned to
drawing as a way of slowing down his process and responding more directly to his surroundings. Although materially
different from the paintings, these works continue a vocabulary of obstruction that has long appeared throughout his
practice: scattered documents recalling bureaucracy, lines interrupted by unseen resistance, and explosive forms that shift
between conflict and celebration depending on the viewer's perspective. Made while working outside his usual studio, the
drawings reveal a practice that remains consistent in its concerns while open to new materials, environments, and rhythms
of making.
About the Artist
Evan Peltzman is a painter and maker based in Brooklyn, New York. Born and raised in California's San Francisco Bay
Area, he was influenced by the region's skateboarding, live music, graffiti, and DIY culture of the 1980s and 1990s. He
builds his own wood panels, canvas stretchers, and frames, while continually experimenting with unconventional methods
of painting. Born with cerebral palsy, Peltzman's work is informed by a lifelong relationship with obstruction, transforming
lived experience into a visual language rooted in material experimentation and altered perception.
