Jes Mingjia
Jes is an architect and photographer whose career bridges the worlds of design and visual storytelling. She studied Architecture and Historic Preservation at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), which shaped her understanding of modern design and historical preservation—an influence that permeates her photography.
Jes began her professional journey with internships at Junya Ishigami + Associates in Tokyo and Sou Fujimoto Architects, where she developed a keen sensitivity to the relationship between architecture and nature. This early experience in Japan led her to focus on capturing the play of light, shadow, and form in her photos.
From 2019 to 2021, Jes worked at OMA (Office for Metropolitan Architecture) in New York, where she embraced the firm’s minimalist and conceptual approach. This exposure sharpened her photographic eye, emphasizing contrasts between light and dark, form and space. At OMA, she began to focus on capturing the dynamic tension between structure and void in her images.
Her time at Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA), where she worked for nearly three years, deeply influenced her photographic style. The fluid, sculptural forms of ZHA’s designs inspired her to experiment with angles and perspectives that highlight organic shapes and abstract compositions. Jes’ photography now reflects the bold, futuristic qualities of Zaha Hadid’s work, blurring the lines between architecture and art.
Now based in New York, Jes continues to explore architecture through her lens, using photography to reveal the emotional and aesthetic experiences that spaces evoke. Her architectural background allows her to capture moments that reveal the deeper narratives within the built environment.
