Gabriel Lee
Gabriel Lee is an artist working primarily in interactive and ceramic sculpture, as well as in craft, language and computational poetics. They were born in Monterey Park, California, USA in 1991 and received their BA in Design | Media Arts from UCLA in 2013, focusing on graphic design for print and digital but working in many other disciplines, including creative coding and bookmaking. They moved to Brooklyn, New York in 2014, where their practice focused on 2D work, including paintings, screen prints, designs fusing illustration and text, and repetitive and iterative works using pen plotters. In 2020, they began hand building ceramics, creating intricate, delicate organic forms and body fragments. Their 2023 solo show at Keepsake Gallery in Brooklyn was mentioned in Hyper-allergic. In 2024 they completed an MFA in Design & Technology at Parsons School of Design, The New School, where they began creating strange, intimate embodied interactions through interactive sculptures. Their uncanny avatars literally incorporate language in highly tactile, analog ways: printing, cutting, and speaking words to their audiences.
